Infrared Sauna Benefits -Pain Relief

By Benjamin Andrews

Pain mitigation is in demand more than ever. The problem is that most pain relievers have very undesirable side effects. The growing popularity of portable infrared saunas has changed the world of pain relief for all of us.

New clinical research on pain offers evidence to establish a novel class of pain -- "heat responsive pain" or HRP -- which encompasses several common pain conditions that can be treated with the use of heat therapy. Researchers studying HRP have observed remarkable therapeutic benefits in using continuous low-level heat therapy for treating lower-back, upper-body and menstrual pain, all conditions that fall under the new HRP classification.

"Through new clinical research, we have found that heat activates complex neurologic, vascular and metabolic mechanisms to mediate the transmission of pain signals and effectively provide relief for a variety of pain conditions," explained the Past-President of the American Pain Society and Clinical Health Psychologist, Riverhills Healthcare, Cincinnati, OH -Peter Vicente. He went on to say that "for centuries, healthcare providers have used topical heat to relieve minor aches and pains. Today, we are just beginning to understand the full range of therapeutic benefits that heat offers." By dilating peripheral blood vessels with infrared heat from a FIR sauna, muscle and soft tissue relief can be maximized. Even the speed of injury recovery is increased because of the increased blood circulation brought on by infrared heat therapy.

Inorder to explore the relationship of a portable infrared sauna with pain relief, a two year long controlled trial with 46 random patients suffering from chronic pain was conducted. The 46 patients received four weeks of multidisciplinary treatment. Of the subjects twenty-two were given 15-minute daily FIR sauna treatments in addition to the other treatments. After the two years had passed, the subjects in the FIR sauna group were 37% more likely (77% vs. 50%) to have returned to work, have improved sleep, and tended toward greater improvement in anger scores and pain behavior scores. This pain relief seems to be a result of the reduction in muscle spasms and the relaxation of myofascial trigger points which are simply irritable tight tissues.

Arthritis pain relief has regularly been reduced or eliminated by frequent portable sauna use. Here is a brief, but useful overview of some of the more common ailments that FIR sauna therapy has helped with. Post traumatic shock has been reversed. Adhesions (scarring) from athletic injuries, trauma or repetitive stress syndromes, Arthritis, gouty, rheumatoid or degenerative joint disease, Brain Injury (The effects of acceleration-deceleration injury or brain contusions) and Compression fractures. Pain which prevented sleep or limited usable sleeping positions, Shoulder Pain, and Spinal Cord Shock. In one person all pain stopped for three days of after only a single treatment, TMJ (arthritis and muscle spasms have been reduced or eliminated), Low Back Pain, Muscle Pain (notably post exercise muscle pain), Muscle Tension, Neuralgia (related to disc protrusion).

Whether you are looking for a natural way to deal with pain or you are tired of the harmful side effects of other pain relievers, regular use of an infrared sauna may be what you need. The ease of use and now their availability as portable units makes them an invaluable resource for many who suffer from chronic pain or just want to mitigate pain naturally.
