Raw Foods Dieting And Eating For Men And Women Over 50

Eating a raw food diet is essentially a way of eating that does not involve the heating of foods. Part of the premise lies in the fact that heating foods above 118 degrees fahrenheit destroys their inherent food enzymes, a vast majority of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and their all important life force.

Chemical Changes in Cooked Foods

Heating foods radically changes their chemical properties making them less "recognizable" in once ingested. For instance, heating an egg renders into a solid mass whereas it began in a liquid, gelatinous. This occurs because the heat of frying or boiling denatures the protein structure within the egg, essentially making it more solid. As a result, this heated egg is now much more difficult for the human digestive tract to break down.

My Own Raw Food Experience

I started following a predominantly raw food diet in 2007 and it literally changed my life. From improved skin complexion to having more energy and mental clarity, I can't tell you how much better you can look and feel by eating the way nature intended for you to eat.

Growing up on dead foods like wheat, dairy, and meat literally destroyed my body and at the young age of 17, I lost my hair to Alopecia as a result of my immune system which had gone hay-wire and began attacking itself. There was once a time when pregnancy after the age of 50 was extremely dangerous for women. While certain risks do accompany the older mother to be, today’s knowledge along with state-of-the-art technology makes pregnancy after 50 much safer for both mother and child.

Many women are waiting later in life to start their families. That means that a woman might be pushing 50 – or even older – when she conceives her first child. So, deciding at 50 that you are ready to have a family might mean you are actually 52 or 53 before your bundle of joy arrives.

Yohimbe Extract; Treatment For Sexual Dysfunction With A Multitude Of Side Effects

Yohimbe is an evergreen tree that is native to the Congo, Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon. The bark of this tree was originally used to treat leprosy in West Africa and it is also effective against fever and coughing. It has been used to prevent heart disease and can also be used as an aphrodisiac. Currently the extract is being used to treat impotence in men.

The part of the tree used is the bark. It is usually taken from the tree when it has the most alkaloid content in May to September. The unfortunate part of it is that the tree usually dies once the bark is taken, but most companies producing Yohimbe extract plant new ones. The good thing is that the Yohimbe tree is very prolific and grows very quickly sometimes growing from trees that succumbed to the bark stripping.

Yohimbe extract can work for those who have erectile dysfunction because it increases the blood flow to the penis and also stimulates the nerves within the genitals. Because it also helps with depression, which can be a cause of impotence it has been thought of as a good remedy for the malady.

Yohimbine is the active compound within the tree bark and studies have been held to find out how effective it is in treating erectile dysfunction. However, there have been no medical studies done on Yohimbe extract so the success rate is questionable. The FDA has approved Yohimbine as a valid treatment for erectile dysfunction but it has not approved the extract.

Females can also be helped by yohimbe extract. It also conducts blood flow to female genital areas to make for a better and longer lasting orgasm. It has been known to heighten the sex drive in both women and men that have a low libido.

Extracts come in various potency. Extracts are more potent and come in 2% all the way up to 20%. The extract works quickly usually within an hour or two but the effects only last a few hours. Yohimbe is difficult to dose and often people take too much for their metabolism to take. It is best to start out slow and make sure side effects are nonexistent or tolerable before taking more.

There are many side effects to yohimbe extract and they include insomnia, dizziness, and nausea. If you have a problem with high blood pressure it is probably not a good thing to try since blood pressure can be increased and another side effect is that the heart beats rapidly. People with kidney problems or peptic ulcers should also avoid yohimbe. If tablets are taken the highest dosage should not exceed 40 mg. Women that are pregnant should avoid the substance as it has been known to cause miscarriages or birth defects. Yohimbe can cause allergic reactions of swelling of mouth or throat or rash. If any of these symptoms are experienced you should go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital.

A regular healthy person that experiences rapid heart beat, sweating and agitation needs to relax and drink cool water. If the side affects do not abate in one hour they need to get to an emergency room.

People with any long lasting medical problem should never take Yohimbe extract. Those that have blood pressure, kidney or heart issues should not even try the substance. It can effect a healthy person as well so side effects should be monitored and those lasting over one hour should be looked at by a doctor. Those people in their 50's and 60's should probably not use the substance because it can cause permanent damage.

Weight-Training with Slow vs. Normal-Speed Repetitions

Weight-training with slow and super-slow repetitions has been promoted in some quarters as superior to normal-speed weight training. An article by Tanimoto et al. in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (vol. 23, no. 8, 2009) tested this hypothesis.

Experimental Method:
Twenty-four young men performed 3 sets of barbell squat exercise,  twice a week for 13 weeks, and were equally distributed among the following 3 groups:

     - Control Group: no organized exercise
     - Slow-Repetition Group: 3 sec descending, 3 sec ascending, no rest between reps
     - Normal-Speed-Repetitions: 1 sec descending, 1 sec ascending, 1 sec between reps

The two lifting groups each did 8 reps with the most weight they could handle for that number of reps and the assigned speed (metronome-timed). Because slow reps are more difficult, the weight used was about 60% of max for the slow group and about 85% of max for the fast group.

Results:
Both training groups significantly improved both their max squatting strength (Slow: 34%, Fast: 28%) and their lean thigh muscle volume (Slow: 2.5%, Fast 3.6%). However the groups did not differ significantly in their percent gains in these two parameters. The authors concluded that slow resistance-training is just as effective as normal-speed training for improving muscle strength and size, and has the additional advantage of being safer because of lower musculoskeletal forces and less elevation of blood pressure.

One area in which the groups differed was in their muscle electrical activity while riding a bicycle at a typical speed and resistance. The slow-trained group developed a more unusual pattern of muscle activation and force application. The authors felt this indicated that slow-speed strength-training may have some unfavorable effects on dynamic physical activities, like those typical of sports. However, they felt that, because of the safety advantages of slow-speed weight-training, the method can be combined for sport training with some fast and exposive lifts (e.g. cleans), “cheating technique”, and plyometrics (e.g. jumping).

Can Vitamin Supplements Help Prevent Osteoporosis In Women Over 50?

It is a known fact that vitamins are essential to good health. In a perfect world we would obtain all needed vitamins directly from the food we eat on a daily basis. However, because this is not reality for many individuals, there are some convincing reasons to consider taking vitamin supplements.

Research has suggested that vitamin E and vitamin A prevents skin cancer. Many studies in recent years have found that other types of cancers can be similarly prevented by taking certain vitamins.

While there is never a fail proof plan when it comes to vitamin supplementation, the evidence does suggest that risk may be reduced and conditions may be improved through vitamin supplementation. Due to all of the possible benefits, supplementation is definitely worth considering for women over 50.
